I have a tendency to be a little too sarcastic for my own good. I believe that it is very important to be able to laugh and have fun with work. We expend too much of our time, energies, and talents on it to take it too seriously. But in my work as an HR professional I recognize that, generally speaking, sarcasm is not the best form of humor for the workplace. Over time it can snowball, taint our thinking, and diminish our ability to approach our work in a productive, contributing manner. That said, there are times when we can be confronted with such ridiculous behavior in the workplace that a little sarcastic humor can prompt some laughter, give perspective, and relieve tension so that we can get back to being productive again.
Despair, Inc. is a company that has elevated workplace sarcasm to an art form. I personally would not choose to hang any of their posters on permanent display in my work place. However, a peek at their website is good for some laughter, and you can use their cards to share some humor and drop an encouraging line to a co-worker who could use some moral support in dealing with the normal, everyday frustrations of the workplace. Some of my favorites are: Despair, Get to Work, Pressure, and Risks.
Take a look and enjoy a laugh!
