I couldn't agree more! What great advice. I have felt a few times that people were telling me their issues because they didn't have anyone else to vent with.

EAP's are the most underused benefit in every company I've ever worked for. We need to do a better job at making sure people know how helpful it can be even before they actually need it.

I had a serious work situation happen -- one that happened outside of work, not during company time but I was representing the company -- that I didn't perceive as a work situation until I returned to work two days later and landed in a meeting with an HR rep and my department head (neither of which had witnessed the incident). I was given punitive measures for the event AND a suspension for something completely unrelated to anything involved in the event -- and at the end, my department head offered EAP as a solution.

The kicker: I had used EAP within my first three weeks with the company to find a therapist and a phychiatrist who had been treating me for the entire five years I had been with the company. I had been open about this with several supervisors, but I don't know whether I had told my department head. Even so, I was floored that he went on to pride himself for offering me an option that I had already taken advantage of -- and when I told him that I was actively in counseling, he had nothing else to say.

What do you think? In this instance, offering me EAP and nothing else for help (there was a lot the department head could have done for me, but chose not to) was ineffective.

It will not surprise you that I left the company (and the profession) 9 months later.

It sounds like it was a tough situation. You asked what I think. I have to say that without knowing the specifics of the situation it's hard to say whether offering you access to an EAP was the right thing for your company to do or whether your supervisor (and/or HR) had additional responsibilities.

The problem can be the attitude of farming-out the humanity, perceived or real. No, HR people are not counsellors, yes I would like them to care, and make a professional referral when things are beyond their skills.

they are working fine. It's been a bit of a learning curve for the students, but I think everyone is getting used to them. The library was the first installment but they're

hoping to transition all labs on campus to thin clients in the near future.We're working on a renovation as well, so this was helpful to think about moving beyond computers.
