I once read that everyone should have at least 5 people in their life that they can count on for encouragement no matter what is going on. I'm not talking about people who will listen to you complain and offer unconditional sympathy - I am talking about people who care enough about your wellbeing and success to give you a gentle reality check and nudge forward when you get off-track or overly negative.
This is especially true at work. The best accomplishments (and rewards) in our careers usually come after sustained effort on a project or in a particular position. We all need to have people that will encourage us to do our best, plug away through obstacles, and rise above the stress and tediousness of work that inevitably occur. Do you know who those people are for you?
My colleague Nancy is one of those people for me (past story about Nancy here and link to her website here). She is a good clear thinker, and not one to mince words. When I whine to her she doesn't pander to me. Instead, she listens politely, offers different (more productive) perspective, and nudges me forward. It's sort of a "pat them on the back while you kick them in the backside" approach to coaching! It's caring without being condescending, and professional without being pushy.
Taped to my computer I have a list of "Nancy's Rules for Success" that she has reminded me of over the years. I read them nearly every day and gain encouragement each time:
- Don't get sucked in emotionally
- Finish well what you have started.
- Keep your eye on your future goals.
- It's only a job - it isn't you.
Who are your encouragers? What gems of wisdom have they shared with you? Please leave a comment and share some encouragement with us today!
Don't worry. We've all been there and look forward to you returning refreshed and energized when you can. Oh yeah....remember to BREATHE!!
